Thanksgiving Yard & Porch Woodworking Patterns: Turkeys, Scarecrows & Harvest Décor

15 Oct 2026

Halloween does not have to mean a full teardown on November 1. Keep the plywood pumpkins, leaf clusters, and porch pieces that already look like harvest, then swap the ghosts and witches for turkeys, scarecrows, and welcome signs. Full-size patterns from The Winfield Collection make that swap a weekend in the shop instead of a new display from scratch.

Most of these projects are cut from 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch exterior plywood, scrap boards, or heat-treated pallet stock. You trace the pattern, cut with a handheld jigsaw, paint in harvest colors, and stake the finished piece along the same walk guests used for trick-or-treat.

Keep What Already Looks Like Harvest

Pumpkins, leaves, and rustic boards still belong on a Thanksgiving lawn. The Harvest Pumpkin Trio Pallet Wood Pattern gives you two sizes, 14 inches and 11 inches tall, built from salvaged shipping-pallet boards, a little plywood, and paint. Set them on the porch steps or hearth and leave them there through the holiday.

The Pallet Wood Scarecrow Pattern already includes a scarecrow, corn shock, and pumpkins. If that group sat out for fall, it can stay. Recycled pallet wood keeps material costs down, saves trees, and keeps used pallets out of landfills when you stick to HT-stamped boards.

Reclaimed Wood Country Pumpkins and Reclaimed Wood Fall Wall Art Panels use the same primitive look on a covered porch or indoor wall. Huge Fall Leaves (English Oak, Birch, Sycamore, Oak, and Maple, up to 22-1/2 inches tall) also carry over. Stake them at the base of a turkey or scarecrow so the yard does not look empty after the Halloween layer comes down.

Put Turkeys Where the Street Can See Them

A turkey is the quintessential Thanksgiving symbol, and you can size it to the lot.

The Yard Turkey Woodcraft Pattern is a realistic bird at about 24 inches tall and 28 inches wide, with full-size cutting and painting guides. The Pallet Wood Turkey Pattern greets guests from recycled pallet boards and uses the same rustic look as the harvest pumpkins and scarecrow.

For a comical sign instead of a realistic bird, Tillie Turkey is a pilgrim-dressed turkey with a “Give Thanks” sign at about 29-1/2 inches tall and 20-1/2 inches wide. Thomas Turkey is her match at 34 inches tall and 24 inches wide with a “Happy Turkey Day” sign. The Thanksgiving Woodcraft Pattern Collection (TGYD5 and TGYD6) puts both on one order.

The Turkey Football Sign Pattern covers the other half of the holiday if football is part of the day. Place any of these along the driveway or walk so the change from Halloween reads before guests reach the porch.

Use Scarecrows as the Bridge Between Seasons

The GIGANTIC Scarecrow Premium Woodcraft Pattern stands 12 feet tall and works as the garden guardian near a driveway or fence. Premium patterns of that size cut in sections, so the height is less of a problem than it looks. On a smaller lot, keep the Pallet Wood Scarecrow Pattern or hang the Scarecrow Swinger Pattern from a porch beam. That swinger is about 15 inches tall and cuts from a 1x12 pine board.

The Fall Welcome Sign Woodcraft Pattern puts a scarecrow and his feathered friends on a “Welcome” board at about 34 inches tall and 23 inches wide. That is porch-post scale, not lawn-corner scale, and it tells guests the house has moved from haunting to harvest.

Finish the Porch, Door, and Mailbox

Fall Door Toppers add a Pumpkin Patch (about 8 inches tall by 23 inches wide) and a Thankful Turkey (about 9-1/4 inches tall by 19 inches wide) above doors and windows. Both cut from thin exterior plywood and store flat after the meal.

The Turkey Mailbox Topper uses scrap wood, finishes at about 30 inches high and 22 inches wide, and can be built in a few hours. Holiday Mailbox Greeters include an interchangeable turkey if you want one mailbox pattern that covers more than one holiday.

Four Thanksgiving Signs fill the walk with “Give Thanks,” “Harvest Time,” and “Happy Thanksgiving” designs: pumpkin and leaves, turkey, pilgrims, and related figures. Board Buddies 5 & 6 use 1x8 boards for tall, slender Thanksgiving characters that take less yard width than a 12-foot scarecrow and store on edge in the garage.

Add a Little Motion and a Long Centerpiece If You Have the Space

The Fall Whirligig Pattern Set (HYD112 and HYD116) includes a Turkey whirligig along with Pumpkin, Haunted House, and Skeleton designs, each up to about 22 inches in diameter. After Halloween, leave the turkey spinning and take the haunted house down. The Fall Holiday Whirligigs Wood Project Plan (HYD116) is the turkey-and-skeleton pair on its own. Mount whirligigs where the wind actually moves.

If the lawn can hold a longer scene, the Thanksgiving Train Woodcraft Pattern is a four-piece display about 35 inches tall and 115 inches long, cut from one 4x8 sheet of 3/4 inch exterior plywood. A Pumpkin Wheelbarrow works on the porch or just inside the door if the weather turns early.

Thanksgiving Pattern Collection #2 adds up to 23 standalone indoor designs when dinner moves the crowd off the lawn and onto the sideboard. The Thanksgiving Stack Woodcraft Pattern is another compact option if you want height in a small footprint.

Materials and Finishes That Hold Up Through Thanksgiving

Use 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch exterior grade plywood for yard turkeys and signs. Door toppers use 5/32 inch or 1/4 inch stock. Pallet projects need HT-stamped boards only. Skip anything marked MB or left unmarked.

Paint in the harvest colors on the pattern guides: pumpkin, terra cotta, spice brown, antique, and deep green. Seal with an exterior, UV-resistant finish. Coat end grain and any joint that can hold water. Stake tall scarecrows and turkeys. Keep plywood slightly off wet ground.

If Halloween pieces are still in good shape, pull the ghosts and witches, leave the sealed pumpkins and leaves, and set the new turkey and welcome sign in the same stake holes. That is the shortest path from October 31 to Thanksgiving week.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Taking down every fall piece on November 1. Pumpkins, leaves, and scarecrows still belong in a harvest display.
  • Choosing a 12-foot scarecrow for a tight city lot. Match height to viewing distance.
  • Painting pallet boards before they are clean, dry, and sanded.
  • Skipping exterior sealer on plywood that will sit through November rain.
  • Putting the turkey behind the house. It needs to read from the street and the walk.

Quick Reference Checklist

  • Keep sealed pumpkins, leaves, and scarecrows that already look like harvest.
  • Add one turkey the street can see: yard turkey, pallet turkey, Tillie, or Thomas.
  • Finish the arrival path with a door topper, mailbox turkey, and welcome sign.
  • Use Board Buddies or Four Thanksgiving Signs if you want height without a giant cutout.
  • Cut from exterior plywood or HT-stamped pallet boards.
  • Paint, seal, and stake before the holiday week gets busy.
  • Store Halloween-only pieces flat. Leave harvest pieces up through Thanksgiving.

A Thanksgiving yard does not need a second round of store décor. It needs a turkey, a scarecrow that can stay, and a porch that looks ready for company. Full-size patterns from The Winfield Collection keep that change inside a couple of shop sessions.
