Cozy Fall Indoor Wood Projects for Thanksgiving Tables & Mantels

19 Oct 2026

Not every fall project needs a stake and a sheet of exterior plywood. The week before Thanksgiving is a good time for smaller indoor builds: pumpkins for the table, leaves for the mantel, and a “Give Thanks” piece for the wall. Full-size patterns from The Winfield Collection keep those projects short. Most use a scroll saw or jigsaw, thin hardwood or reclaimed boards, and a coat of sealer instead of outdoor spar varnish.

These pieces also solve a storage problem. After dinner, they sit on a shelf until next October. They do not need yard stakes, and they do not compete with the turkey already standing in the lawn.

Scrolled and Reclaimed Pumpkins for the Table and Hearth

Pumpkins can still be used indoors, provided their size is reduced from yard-sized to centerpiece-sized.

The Scrolled Pumpkin Decor Scroll Saw Pattern finishes about 8 inches tall and 24 inches wide. That width sits well down the center of a table or along a mantel. The pattern lists 1/4 inch finish plywood, graphite paper, glue, spice brown and terra cotta paint, and a polyurethane sealer.

Reclaimed Wood Country Pumpkins go larger, up to 22 inches tall and 17 inches wide. They take reclaimed shop wood, pallet boards, or hardwoods, and they finish with rustic bows. The primitive look matches a farmhouse table better than a glossy yard pumpkin.

The Harvest Pumpkin Trio Pallet Wood Pattern is built for a porch or hearth, with a 14-inch pumpkin and an 11-inch pumpkin. Move the pair inside if the weather turns, or build a second set just for the dining room. Pine Pumpkin Display (up to about 16-3/4 inches) and the Set of 2 Decorative Pumpkins fill the gaps between candlesticks and serving dishes.

Wall Panels, Intarsia, and Welcome Pieces for the Mantel

Reclaimed Wood Fall Wall Art Panels are made for the mantel. They use reclaimed wood, a little plywood, or hardwoods, and they finish with rustic ribbon or bows. Hang one panel above the fireplace and keep the matching pumpkin group on the hearth so the room reads as one project.

Intarsia is the slower indoor option, and it earns the wall space. The Pumpkin & Scarecrow Intarsia Design Pattern is 16 inches by 18 inches and about 71 pieces. The Autumn Scarecrow Intarsia Project Pattern is 14 inches by 20-1/2 inches and about 165 pieces. Both belong on a dining-room wall or at the end of a mantel, not out in the rain.

The Fall Welcome Swag Intarsia Design Pattern is smaller, 8-1/2 inches by 17 inches and 44 pieces. That size works on a hallway wall or the back of a sideboard. Country Time Autumn Circular Saw Blade is a 7-1/2-inch accent if you want a shop-made piece that still looks finished in the house.

Slotted Leaves, Baskets, and Small Décor You Can Finish in an Evening

Slotted Fall Leaf Decor includes three designs in two sizes, up to 9 inches tall. Slot the pieces together, set a few on the table runner, and lean the rest against books on a shelf. They take less wood than a yard leaf and can be stored in a drawer.

The Collapsible Pumpkin Basket/Trivet Project Pattern is the most useful piece in this group. Use it under a hot dish or as a small basket for napkins and place cards. It collapses for storage after the meal, which is the point of a Thanksgiving project that should not take over the kitchen.

Slotted Pumpkin Ornaments (about 3-1/2 inches tall) hang from a buffet lamp or a small stand on the mantel. Pumpkin Lanterns finish about 10-5/8 inches tall and work with a battery candle on a sideboard if you want light without a yard LED kit.

Thanksgiving Collections and “Give Thanks” Wall Pieces

If you want several indoor designs from one pattern order, start with a collection. Thanksgiving Pattern Collection #2 includes 23 Thanksgiving designs for the home, with pieces up to about 18 inches tall in mixed thicknesses from 5/32 inch through 3/4 inch. That range covers shelf sitters, small signs, and table accents without buying a separate pattern for each.

Four Thanksgiving Signs give you ready messages: “Give Thanks,” “Harvest Time,” and “Happy Thanksgiving,” with pumpkin-and-leaf, turkey, and pilgrim designs. Use the smaller signs on a mantel and save any larger ones for the porch if you still have a stake hole free.

Tillie Turkey holds a “Give Thanks” sign and can stand indoors against a wall if 29-1/2 inches is not too tall for the room. Pair her with a short “THANKS” or harvest panel from the collection so the wording repeats from the table to the wall without looking like a yard display brought inside by mistake.

How to Finish Indoor Fall Pieces So They Look Like Furniture

Use 1/4 inch finish plywood or hardwood for scroll-saw work. Reclaimed and pallet boards need extra sanding so no one picks up a splinter from a trivet. Paint in the pattern colors: spice brown, terra cotta, antique, pumpkin, and deep green. A clear indoor polyurethane or wiping varnish is enough if the piece stays inside. Skip exterior spar varnish unless the same pumpkin will go back to the porch.

Keep scale consistent. An 8-inch scrolled pumpkin and 9-inch slotted leaves belong together. A 22-inch country pumpkin belongs on the hearth or a sideboard, not in the middle of the dinner plates. Group odd numbers: three pumpkins, or one wall panel with two leaves.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Building yard-scale pieces for a table that already holds serving bowls.
  • Leaving pallet boards rough on a trivet or basket people will touch.
  • Mixing Halloween faces with “Give Thanks” signs on the same mantel.
  • Skipping sealer on painted scroll-saw work. Kitchen humidity marks bare wood.
  • Hanging a 165-piece intarsia scarecrow too high. It should be seen from the table.

Quick Reference Checklist

  • Choose one table project: scrolled pumpkins, country pumpkins, or a collapsible trivet.
  • Choose one wall or mantel project: fall panels, intarsia, or a Give Thanks sign.
  • Add slotted leaves or small ornaments to fill the gaps.
  • Cut from finished plywood, hardwood, or sanded reclaimed boards.
  • Paint, seal, and group pieces by size.
  • Store flat after Thanksgiving so the same set comes out next fall.

A cozy indoor display does not need a full day in the shop. One pumpkin group, a leaf cluster, and a short harvest sign are enough if they are cut clean and finished like furniture. Full-size indoor patterns from The Winfield Collection keep that work inside in an evening or two.
